Friday Night Session April 5th 2013

Hosted by Andrew Jervis, DJ Tomas, and Cez

After 17 years at KUSF/KUSF in Exile this episode will be the last Friday Night Session on the station. It’s been a blast. Thanks to everyone at KUSF in all it’s incarnations, to all the listeners, and to all the guests – couldn’t have done this so long without you. And to my co-hosts over the years – Caspar, Tomas, Mike Bee, Cez, Jantine et al. And also (and especially) to my amazing wife who put up with my Friday night radio habit, and with me coming home late (and raiding the kitchen,) for longer than anyone should have to endure.

We’ll be taking a break. We will come back. Probably with a monthly. Probably just here on The Sport of Selection.
There will be news on Tuesday about a big new show that I’m involved with.
Until then, Fridays will never be the same.
Cheers,
Andrew Jervis x

Friday Night Session March 22nd 2013

Mixes by Andrew Jervis

I’ve been waiting for a reason to air these mixes on the Friday Night Session. I made them for other radio shows last year. The “22 Steps To Soul Mix” was for the Stolen Moments show hosted by John Bailey in Australia. And the California Soul mix was made for the Paris DJs. A week spent battling a nasty cold and facing impending deadlines left me with little time to prepare a new show, and led me to glue these 2 mixes together and present them for you, for tonights session. Raw, rare, and rootsy jazz, hippie soul, freedom funk and tropical goodies abound…enjoy! Continue reading

Delighted to have two connoisseurs of vintage funk, soul, and jazz joining me tonight, too. Jazzman Records head honcho Gerald drops a forthcoming release on his label from The Sign of Four and plays an all time fave from Ella Fitzgerald. Also, SF-based DJ Sureshot weighs in with a fantastic mix of soulful boogie, funk and beyond. Read on for the tracklist and a few words from Jazzman Gerald… Continue reading

Friday Night Session March 1st 2013

Special Guest Mix: Richard E (E Type/Further Out)

This weeks show features an hour of my favorite tracks of the moment followed by a stellar mix by Richard E. Record collector, producer, musician, dj and head of Further Out Recordings, Richard has been releasing a series of re-edits on E-Type Records and is working on a debut album with his partner Annabel – he squeezed some exclusives from their collaboration into the mix and they are beautiful! The Session opens with the brand new Hairy Hands track (his best yet!) and we run through recent releases by SF’er Kacey Johansing, the outerworldly sound of Noyce, and some juicy tropical joints from MopMop, Bomba Estereo and Sheila Rickards. Friday Night Session Feb 8th 2013

Hosted by Andrew Jervis
Special guest: Mitzi

All Music Guide credits Donald Byrd on over 1600 productions, he was a musical genius, R.I.P. 3 of my Byrd favorites from 3 different albums (New Perspectives, Places and Spaces, and Stepping Into Tomorrow) are sprinkled amongst the bag of new tracks that I was eager to play tonight. Guesting in the 3FromMe segment is Australian band Mitzi. They have a new album on Future Classic dropping in a week or two, and you will like them if Toro Y Moi and LCD Soundsystem are your cups of tea. Their indie-leaning, garage-y disco sound was inspiration for a set of new tracks that blur the lines between electronic, indie, and dance, including new bits from Atoms for Peace, Misfot Mod, PVT, Vex Ruffin & James Pants, Javelin and Lusine. Also in the mix is classy soul from Charles Bradley and San Francisco based The Sureshot Symphony Solution, cinematics from The Kramford Look, uptempo goodies from Glenn Jackson, Emilie Nana and Ian Pooley, and swampy folk funk from William Adamson, the new project from Earl Zinger/2Banksof4. 3FromMe Guest: Philip Owusu

On this weeks episode I am delighted to be debuting a super dope brand new Philip Owusu track. The Danish soul man has an awesome album set for release later this year and is my guest in the 3FromMe segment. On the menu tonight are fantastic new songs back by genre-traversing production from the likes of Hundred Strong and Joseph Malik, Natural Self, Free The Robots, and Devendra Banhart and some tunes-of-the-moment from BJ Smith and Lion Babe. Plus, I’m digging new cuts from London-trio Qtier, Berkeley-based Toro Y Moi, and New Yorker Falty DL that blend soulful electronics with indie-pop stylings. Also in the bag are crackly vintage oldies from Jimmy Preacher Ellis, Toussaint McCall, Gloria Ann Taylor and Eunice Collins, and some late night boogie business from Kleer, Komiko and the Circle City Band to round out proceedings. Hold tight, it’s Friday Night . . . read on for the playlist and a few words with Philip Owusu Continue reading
