Friday Night Session April 5th 2013

Hosted by Andrew Jervis, DJ Tomas, and Cez

After 17 years at KUSF/KUSF in Exile this episode will be the last Friday Night Session on the station. It’s been a blast. Thanks to everyone at KUSF in all it’s incarnations, to all the listeners, and to all the guests – couldn’t have done this so long without you. And to my co-hosts over the years – Caspar, Tomas, Mike Bee, Cez, Jantine et al. And also (and especially) to my amazing wife who put up with my Friday night radio habit, and with me coming home late (and raiding the kitchen,) for longer than anyone should have to endure.

We’ll be taking a break. We will come back. Probably with a monthly. Probably just here on The Sport of Selection.
There will be news on Tuesday about a big new show that I’m involved with.
Until then, Fridays will never be the same.
Cheers,
Andrew Jervis x

Friday Night Session Jan 25th 2013

3FromMe Guest: Philip Owusu

On this weeks episode I am delighted to be debuting a super dope brand new Philip Owusu track. The Danish soul man has an awesome album set for release later this year and is my guest in the 3FromMe segment. On the menu tonight are fantastic new songs back by genre-traversing production from the likes of Hundred Strong and Joseph Malik, Natural Self, Free The Robots, and Devendra Banhart and some tunes-of-the-moment from BJ Smith and Lion Babe. Plus, I’m digging new cuts from London-trio Qtier, Berkeley-based Toro Y Moi, and New Yorker Falty DL that blend soulful electronics with indie-pop stylings. Also in the bag are crackly vintage oldies from Jimmy Preacher Ellis, Toussaint McCall, Gloria Ann Taylor and Eunice Collins, and some late night boogie business from Kleer, Komiko and the Circle City Band to round out proceedings. Hold tight, it’s Friday Night . . . read on for the playlist and a few words with Philip Owusu Continue reading

Some of the years best new acts like Ultraista and Stubborn Heart are featured alongside recently re-issued tunes from Rodriguez, Paco Zambrano, and US Aries (from the awesome Personal Space compilation.) There’s plenty of tropical business from the Bay Area’s 1-O.A.K., Brazilian Lucas Santanna, Mala in Cuba, and Finnish genius Jimi Tenor. Georgia Ann Muldrow, THEESatisfaction, and JJ Doom provide some of the years favorite hip hop moments, and acts like Nicolas Jaar, Neneh Cherry, Hairy Hands and SOHN made tunes that were difficult to label but far too good to leave out! 3FromMe Guest: Matt and Matt of Lefse Records

Andrew holds down the first hour with a selection of stolen moments, hidden gems, and tracks that nearly fell between the cracks…From the electronic sound of Mdou Moctar of Mali and Sarp Yilmaz of Istanbul, to the unique flavors served up by Australians Hiatus Kaiyote and German-based Taron Trekka. Cez follows with a second hour of current faves from Leatherette, Alice Russell, Andy Stott and more. Sandwiched between us are our 3FromMe guests, the two Matts who run the Sacramento-based Lefse Records. Friday Night Session Nov 9th 2012

Hosted by DJ Tomas
This week’s Session highlight’s our program’s eclectic depth and dedication to new sounds, as we travel from the Van Morrison-esque songcraft of Michael Kiwanuka to the insistent electronics of Letherette. Along the way we revisit Wendy Rene‘s Stax gem, famously sampled by Wu-Tang, and explore Brazilian rhythms with ace turntablist DJ Nu-Mark. Plus some oddly named characters (Sarp Yilmaz, Uffe, Falty DL) contribute superb club-friendly tracks to warm up your autumn night. Playlist follows . . . Continue reading

Friday Night Session October 26th 2012

Hosted by Tomas

This week’s Session features a ton of new talents with interesting names, like Glasgow’s Dam Mantle and his London cohort My Panda Shall Fly. Despite the strange monikers, though, the music is brilliant. The aforementioned artists trade in eclectic bass sounds, and there’s a similar adventurousness displayed in the electronic work of Lapalux, Monokle and the more spartanly named producer U. We’ll also feature plenty of deeply soulful music this week from vocalist Jose James and jazz pianist Robert Glasper, plus multi-instrumentalist Mark deClive-Lowe and 2000 Black super-combo Tatham, Mensah, Lord and Ranks. We circle the world via Africa and Latin America with Pyramid Blue, Chico Mann and Captain Planet, and wrap the show up with an an hour-long in-the-mix set featuring burners from Falty DL, Jack Dixon, Deepchild and others. So dive in with DJ Tomas and the Friday Night Session, we’ll put the tunes on the burner and get cooking. Playlist . . . Continue reading
