Friday Night Session April 5th 2013

Hosted by Andrew Jervis, DJ Tomas, and Cez

After 17 years at KUSF/KUSF in Exile this episode will be the last Friday Night Session on the station. It’s been a blast. Thanks to everyone at KUSF in all it’s incarnations, to all the listeners, and to all the guests – couldn’t have done this so long without you. And to my co-hosts over the years – Caspar, Tomas, Mike Bee, Cez, Jantine et al. And also (and especially) to my amazing wife who put up with my Friday night radio habit, and with me coming home late (and raiding the kitchen,) for longer than anyone should have to endure.

We’ll be taking a break. We will come back. Probably with a monthly. Probably just here on The Sport of Selection.
There will be news on Tuesday about a big new show that I’m involved with.
Until then, Fridays will never be the same.
Cheers,
Andrew Jervis x

Friday Night Session December 28th

Hosted by DJ Tomas.

For the third and final installment of our Best of 2012 wrap up we dig into the beats, jazz and bass that made this year a great one for music. One interesting trend: a plethora of high quality singles and EPs from the likes of Sweatson Klank (a.k.a. TAKE), Lapalux, Jets, Stereo 77, Colo, Beaumont and more. But there were quality long players out there as well, and we sample from some by Johnathan Blake, Antibalas, Blaktroniks, The Spy From Cairo and DFRNT. In between you’ll hear some flat-out scorchers from Tatham, Mensah, Lord and Ranks, Submerse, Drumagick and ARP 101. It’s a bounty of soulful, eclectic and downright interesting music. Friday Night Session November 30th 2012

3FromMe Guest: Letherette (Ninja Tune)

We maybe near the end of the year, but there’s been no slow-down of quality tunes hitting our in-boxes this past couple of weeks. There’s simply too much good stuff to squeeze into one show. Making the cut this episode are tasty electronic songs from fLako, Darkstar, and Chromatics, plus boundary-pushing business by Nicolas Jaar and Falty DL. Picking tracks in our 3FromMe segment are Ninja Tune starlets Letherette – read on for the playlist and a few words with our guests for the week… Continue reading

Along the way we revisit Wendy Rene‘s Stax gem, famously sampled by Wu-Tang, and explore Brazilian rhythms with ace turntablist DJ Nu-Mark. Plus some oddly named characters (Sarp Yilmaz, Uffe, Falty DL) contribute superb club-friendly tracks to warm up your autumn night. Playlist follows . . . Continue reading

Friday Night Session October 26th 2012

Hosted by Tomas

This week’s Session features a ton of new talents with interesting names, like Glasgow’s Dam Mantle and his London cohort My Panda Shall Fly. Despite the strange monikers, though, the music is brilliant. The aforementioned artists trade in eclectic bass sounds, and there’s a similar adventurousness displayed in the electronic work of Lapalux, Monokle and the more spartanly named producer U. We’ll also feature plenty of deeply soulful music this week from vocalist Jose James and jazz pianist Robert Glasper, plus multi-instrumentalist Mark deClive-Lowe and 2000 Black super-combo Tatham, Mensah, Lord and Ranks. We circle the world via Africa and Latin America with Pyramid Blue, Chico Mann and Captain Planet, and wrap the show up with an an hour-long in-the-mix set featuring burners from Falty DL, Jack Dixon, Deepchild and others. So dive in with DJ Tomas and the Friday Night Session, we’ll put the tunes on the burner and get cooking. Playlist . . . Continue reading
